Few places hold the memory of a neighbourhood the way the Bada Thakur Dwara Temple holds Shahdara's. Standing for more than 600 years, and enshrining idols believed to be nearly 1,000 years old, it is among the oldest living centres of worship in this part of Delhi. This is a temple of Lord Krishna, known here by the tender name Sehej Thakur Ji — the Lord who is approached not with fear, but with ease, affection, and familiarity.

To the people of Shahdara, the temple is not merely a landmark; it is their Gram Devta, the presiding deity of the land, watching over generations who have grown up in its shadow. Its story is inseparable from the story of the locality itself. The name Shahdara is drawn from Shah's Darra — the doorway of the Shah — and through every change the area has seen across the centuries, this temple has remained its spiritual heart, the constant to which families have returned for births, blessings, festivals, and farewells.

Among those who know it, Bada Thakur Dwara is lovingly called the Banke Bihari Temple of Delhi — and the name carries a promise. The temple town of Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna's Banke Bihari draws millions, lies a journey away that not every devotee can make. For them, this temple is a blessing close to home: it is believed that those who come here with faith receive the very same grace of Lord Krishna that they would seek in Vrindavan, without ever leaving the city.
जो इसे जानते हैं, उनके बीच बड़ा ठाकुर द्वारा को स्नेहपूर्वक दिल्ली का बाँके बिहारी मंदिर कहा जाता है — और यह नाम एक वचन समेटे हुए है। वृंदावन, जहाँ भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के बाँके बिहारी के दर्शन हेतु लाखों श्रद्धालु उमड़ते हैं, इतनी दूर है कि हर भक्त वह यात्रा नहीं कर पाता। उनके लिए यह मंदिर घर के निकट एक वरदान है: ऐसा माना जाता है कि जो श्रद्धा के साथ यहाँ आते हैं, उन्हें भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की वही कृपा प्राप्त होती है जिसे वे वृंदावन में पाना चाहते हैं — वह भी नगर छोड़े बिना।

It stands among the rare temples where the worship of Krishna is preserved in its fullest, most living tradition, unbroken across generations of priests and devotees.

Shri Dudhadhari Maharaj & the offering of milk
श्री दूधाधारी महाराज एवं दूध का अर्पण
The temple is believed to have been founded by Shri Dudhadhari Maharaj, a saint of such austerity that he took nothing but raw milk as his sustenance through his life — and from this vow came the name by which he is remembered, Dudhadhari, “the one who subsists on milk.” His presence still anchors the temple, and his Samadhi remains a place of living devotion.
ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस मंदिर की स्थापना श्री दूधाधारी महाराज ने की थी — एक ऐसे संत जिनकी तपस्या इतनी कठोर थी कि उन्होंने जीवन भर केवल कच्चा दूध ही अपना आहार बनाया, और इसी व्रत से वह नाम पड़ा जिससे वे स्मरण किए जाते हैं — दूधाधारी, “जो केवल दूध पर निर्वाह करते हैं।” उनकी उपस्थिति आज भी मंदिर का आधार है, और उनकी समाधि जीवंत भक्ति का स्थान बनी हुई है।
Each Sunday, devotees offer raw milk at the Samadhi of Dudhadhari Maharaj. After the offering, the temple priests distribute the very same milk back to devotees as prashad — received in the exact form in which it was offered, now carrying the saint's blessing.
हर रविवार श्रद्धालु दूधाधारी महाराज की समाधि पर कच्चा दूध अर्पित करते हैं। अर्पण के पश्चात मंदिर के पुजारी वही दूध भक्तों को प्रसाद के रूप में पुनः वितरित करते हैं — ठीक उसी रूप में जिस रूप में वह अर्पित किया गया था, जो अब संत का आशीर्वाद लिए होता है।

Over the centuries, Bada Thakur Dwara has become known as a temple where heartfelt prayers are answered. It is held especially dear by couples longing for a child — and among the temple's most cherished stories are those of families who came in hope and returned in gratitude, bringing their children to the feet of Sehej Thakur Ji. Word of such blessings has passed quietly from family to family, drawing devotees not through grandeur or publicity, but through the simple, enduring faith of those whose prayers were heard.
सदियों से बड़ा ठाकुर द्वारा एक ऐसे मंदिर के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हुआ है जहाँ हृदय से की गई प्रार्थनाएँ पूर्ण होती हैं। यह विशेष रूप से उन दंपतियों के लिए अत्यंत प्रिय है जो संतान की कामना रखते हैं — और मंदिर की सबसे प्रिय कथाओं में वे परिवार हैं जो आशा लेकर आए और कृतज्ञता लेकर लौटे, अपने बच्चों को सहज ठाकुर जी के चरणों में लेकर। ऐसी कृपा की चर्चा एक परिवार से दूसरे परिवार तक मौन रूप से पहुँचती रही है, जो भक्तों को वैभव या प्रचार से नहीं, बल्कि उन लोगों की सरल एवं चिरस्थायी आस्था से यहाँ खींचती है जिनकी प्रार्थनाएँ सुनी गईं।

Devotion at Bada Thakur Dwara follows the rhythm of the day. It is one of the only temples in the entire NCR where aarti is performed four times daily — a discipline of worship that very few temples still maintain, marking each passage of the day from the Lord's waking to His rest:
बड़ा ठाकुर द्वारा में भक्ति दिन की लय के साथ चलती है। यह समूचे NCR के उन गिने-चुने मंदिरों में से एक है जहाँ प्रतिदिन चार बार आरती की जाती है — उपासना का ऐसा अनुशासन जिसे आज बहुत कम मंदिर निभाते हैं, जो ठाकुर जी के जागरण से लेकर उनके विश्राम तक दिन के हर प्रहर को अंकित करता है:

Generations of seva — the Kaushik family

For generations, the seva of the Bada Thakur Dwara Temple has been carried out by the Kaushik family — a lineage that has tended to Sehej Thakur Ji and to this sacred place through changing times, never letting the daily rhythm of worship falter. Theirs is a family of engineers and doctors, accomplished in their professions, yet they have always returned to the temple to perform its every duty with their own hands.
पीढ़ियों से बड़ा ठाकुर द्वारा मंदिर की सेवा कौशिक परिवार द्वारा की जाती रही है — एक ऐसी वंश-परंपरा जिसने बदलते समय के साथ सहज ठाकुर जी की और इस पवित्र स्थल की देखभाल की, और कभी भी नित्य पूजा के क्रम को टूटने नहीं दिया। यह अभियंताओं और चिकित्सकों का परिवार है, अपने-अपने क्षेत्रों में निपुण, फिर भी सदैव मंदिर लौटकर इसकी हर सेवा अपने हाथों से करता रहा है।
What guides them is nishkam bhav — selfless service offered without any wish for reward or recognition, purely for the love of the Lord. It is this spirit of quiet, unbroken devotion, passed from one generation to the next, that has kept the temple alive across the centuries — and it is the very same spirit in which the Bada Thakur Dwara Foundation now takes up its restoration.
उन्हें जो प्रेरित करता है वह है निष्काम भाव — किसी फल या मान्यता की कामना के बिना, केवल भगवान के प्रेम हेतु की गई निःस्वार्थ सेवा। यही मौन, अखंड भक्ति का भाव, जो एक पीढ़ी से दूसरी पीढ़ी तक हस्तांतरित होता रहा, मंदिर को सदियों से जीवित रखे हुए है — और यही वह भाव है जिसके साथ बड़ा ठाकुर द्वारा फ़ाउंडेशन अब इसके जीर्णोद्धार का दायित्व अपने हाथों में ले रहा है।
